Pregnancy Beauty Dos and Don’ts

Every woman has heard those pregnancy beauty rules. It is enough to cause anxiety in an already emotional time. Luckily, there are always options, especially recently, of beauty products and services that use less harmful chemicals.

While pregnant, your skin becomes much more sensitive. Products that you have used for years can cause sudden allergic reactions. This is the time to start reading cosmetics labels. Salicylic acid, beta hydroxy, and retinoids are all chemicals you want to stay away from as studies have shown that they may cause birth defects. These are most commonly found in acne and anti-aging products.

Also to look out for — products that have lecithin, vegetable protein, or phopharidycholine (typically found in soy-based product). These can cause skin discoloration or the “pregnancy mask.” In a somewhat confusing turn of events, products that contain active soy are fine to use and do not cause discoloration.

And now for the age old question: Is it safe to dye hair while pregnant? Hair color can be a tricky thing, and as a professional, my recommend is to avoid it. However, there are alternatives to your usual hair color products. Henna is an all-natural hair dye that is sold online or at health food stores. Although there are different shades, it will typically fade out to a reddish tint. Which ever product you decide to use, avoid coloring hair during your first trimester.
