Beauty Inspiration: Madam CJ Walker

It can be easy to become discouraged. Cosmetology is a competitive field. But here is some inspiration that can change your outlook. Madam C.J. Walker was an African American cosmetologist in the early 1900s who became famous for creating a highly successful line of hair and beauty products for African American women.

Madam C.J. Walker, born in 1867, was the youngest of 6 children and the first of her family born into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation. She experienced hair loss like many women did, and began experimenting with home remedies until she developed her first shampoo and ointment. They contained sulfur which made the scalp healthier and promoted hair growth. She began selling her products through the US through mail order. She also began to train other black women in entrepreneurship.

Madam Walker was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in Chicago, and the National Cosmetology Hall of Fame. She is also in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first women to become a millionaire through her own efforts.

Madam Walker is an inspiration to all aspiring cosmetologists. With an idea and hard work, even what may seem impossible is achievable.
