Funky Nail Trends — Do or Don’t?

In the past few months funky manicures have been all the rage. Old-school trends as well as new-age lacquering techniques are popping up on everyone from preteens to Cougars. We’ve seen resurgence of  hand painted marbling, one nail different, crackling overcoat, ombre, and half moon nails.

Nail Marbling

This brings me back to the times where I would search my town for a nail salon that offered a design on all 10 nails for free back in the day. The technique is choosing two or more different colors of polish and creating a swirl effect over the nail.  It’s usually done with thin nail polish brushes or even a small amount of water in a cup just like tie dying.

One Nail Different

This nail trend consists of simply painting one nail a different color from the rest. This is a fun way to incorporate different colors of your outfit into your nails.

Crackle Overcoat

To create this effect, a crackle overcoat is used. Many different brands have created with their own (some better than others!) in different shades. With a thin or thick layer, the patterns of the crackle change and create a cool effect over base shade.

Ombre Nails

Ombre nails are when each nail is painted a different shade of a certain color, going from light to dark. It could be hard to find the right shades for the right effect. It is basically the “One Color Different” trend on overdrive.

Half Moon Nails

These might be the hardest to accomplish and pull off. it’s sometimes called a Reverse French manicure. It consists of having a large amount of black tip and a small portion of white on top, like a half moon. A steady hand is needed to create this look, so some people might not be able to try it out at home.
