Joe Francis was a barber shop legend. At the age of 17, he was known as the youngest licensed barber in Minnesota. He and his wife achieved their dreams and it all started with opening a one-chair barbershop. Joe believed that cosmetologists should receive the same benefits and opportunities available in other fields. He also had wanted to create a franchise system that provided training for people who wanted to open up their own successful businesses. Francis passed away after a long, difficult battle with cancer in 1994. It was at that time that a foundation was established to further Joe’s goal of encouraging and assisting deserving individuals with a chance to attend barber/cosmetology school.
The Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship is for available students enrolling in cosmetology school. An award of $1,000 is awarded to 19 students annually. Students must submit a complete application that includes a one-page essay about why you want to go to cosmetology school that demonstrates your financial need, along with your ambitions, interests and a brief family history. Students must also submit one to two letters of recommendation. Winners are chosen by a board of members and other beauty industry professionals and be paid directly to the student’s school.
