A New Day Spa – For Kids?!

Monday, October 20th, 2008

For my cousin’s wedding, her seven-year-old little sister (also my cousin) came with us to the salon. She got her mani/pedi too and was all grown up. But while she waited for us, she became impatient. She didn’t want to wait for those nails to dry. She ended up getting fresh paint all over the new pedicure chairs and smearing the job the girl just worked so diligently to perfect. How, then, can someone open up a whole business catering to these young gals?

Don’t get me wrong, I would have absolutely loved going to the “spa” when I was little. But I’m not sure that all little girls would feel the same way. And how can you keep them entertained? When my brother was little, he absolutely loathed getting his haircut – even at those places with the fun seats in them. I realize he’s a boy and it’s slightly different to have a buzzer coming at your head, but lots of little kids don’t like to get their hair cut, much less have strangers handle them.

That’s why I was surprised to see that a salon/spa for children had set up shop. The Dimples Kids Spa opened in Brooklyn a few weeks ago and offers more than just your typical mani/pedi. Kids can come in and get chocolate facials, tattoos (temporary I assume), makeup applications, haircuts, and more. And that’s at a price too. A regular pedicure will run you $20 and doesn’t include trimming or filing. It’s basically just the polish and the chance to see if your child can sit still for an extended period of time.

I wonder what it’s like to work at the Dimples Kids Spa with only children? I absolutely love children – I babysat for years – but it must be difficult performing a service with them. Could there be different, specific training? Patience must certainly be one of these special cosmetologists’ virtues. The Dimples Kids Spa just proves that you can really do so many different things after you’ve completed your training and received your degree.
