New York is home to one of the greatest cities in the world, New York City, and its more than 8 million residents. But this fine state is home to the fine cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Yonkers, and Albany. Also known as the Empire State, New York is more than just metropolitan. The beautiful Adirondack Mountains, Catskills, Great Appalachian Valley, Hudson River, and Lake Champlain all make their home in New York.
New York is also a leader in alternative medicine. The excellent educational institutions promote the latest in natural healing studies, including that of the ancient art of acupuncture. New York requires a license for practicing acupuncturists (L.Ac.). Before a license can be obtained, you must complete 4,050 clock hours (which is equivalent to a formal three-year program) of didactic and clinical work. The training program should be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) and meet New York’s professional education requirement. Prior to enrolling in acupuncture school, you need 60 semester hours of undergraduate work including nine semester hours of biosciences. Also, you must be at least 21 and pass both the written and practical National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) examinations.
